Infections are another cause of arthritis in the knee. Some viruses attack the cartilage causing it to break down. A cause of bacteria is strep throat. Bacteria can also invade the joint and cause a lot of inflammation, which can crack the cartilage and make it susceptible to breakage. Trauma to the joint can also cause a breakdown of the cartilage.
